Four possible kitchens for a house that was growing
Rosewood is a kitchen in West Hollywood, California, inside a single-family house on Rosewood Avenue that was undergoing an addition and renovation. Through the window above the sink you can see the neighbour's low volume and the green of the yard: in Southern California the kitchen always looks outward.
The commission arrived once the addition drawings already had approval from the City of West Hollywood's Building & Safety department: a 424-square-foot addition that brings a primary bedroom with walk-in closet and bathroom, two more bedrooms, a laundry room and the hallway that stitches them together to the ground floor. The kitchen interior was developed on top of that permit model, without moving a single wall.
Four versions of the same plan were drawn so the decision could be made by looking rather than reading: the microwave above, built into the upper cabinets, or below in the base run; a 36-inch or a 40-inch range; a larger sink. The materials stayed constant — white upper cabinets, deep blue bases, veined countertops, wood floors and a blue-and-white star-patterned tile behind the range — so that what changed was the way the kitchen is used, not its colour.
The same kitchen, four times over
The starting point was not a blank sheet but somebody else's model: the addition's permit submission, already filed. Work began on the inside, sourcing and adjusting BIM families until the kitchen existed in enough detail to be rendered; the scene was then cloned four times, and in each copy a single variable moved. Set side by side, the four images turned a technical argument about cabinets and appliances into a choice the client could make in one sitting.
