Architecture for emergencies.
Architecture in Transit is an idea that seeks to reuse the infrastructure of mass-transit buses — vehicles that are being taken out of service — and adapt them as support structures for emergency situations.
Since 2005 we have developed a series of proposals that, under this idea of rehabilitation, aim to configure devices capable of providing the services required for each emergency while taking advantage of the technical, economic and environmental benefits of buses.

We propose using buses that are being removed from mass-transit systems, such as TransMilenio in Bogotá, and adapting their interiors to operate as rapid-diagnosis units. The buses considered for this proposal are those reaching the end of their useful life, but whose mechanical and rolling systems still function correctly.
In an implementation scenario, the units are parked where the service is needed. Medical staff inside the buses prepare the material for sample collection, access stairs are deployed for the public, people line up outside with two meters of distance, and enter the four sampling booths in turns.
Each diagnostic unit consists of four isolated, aseptic and easy-to-clean booths, accessed only by the general public for sample collection. People remain there for five minutes while medical staff carry out the procedure. Medical personnel enter through an independent access and remain isolated and safe inside the unit. The unit includes areas for sample-analysis devices, storage areas, a sanitary unit and a support-equipment and supply area for water and energy.
