Sustainable architecture in Colombia: how we practise it

Sustainable architecture is not a finish added at the end: it is a way of starting. Our designs look closely at the place they sit in and grow out of a careful study of the context, the climatic conditions and the ecological potential inherent to each project. In a country with Colombia’s climatic diversity —from the cold savanna of Bogotá to the Caribbean and the coffee region— that reading of the place is the first design decision.

The method rests on concrete tools: bioclimatic analysis of the site and its solar exposure, natural ventilation and daylighting studies, and environmental, thermal-comfort and lighting-comfort simulations that test the strategies against the real conditions the users will live in. The work is coordinated in BIM, which makes it possible to verify those decisions on projects of different scales and with many actors.

Ábaco (Cajicá, 88 two-family homes) organises its urban layout around the sun path: the roofs were tilted 10° to the south and left ready with ducts and circuits for photovoltaic panels, and the double-brick envelope works as thermal mass that stores the heat of the day and returns it during the cold savanna night.

Ecohaus (Chía, 88 apartments) was born as a reflection on conventional multifamily housing: a flexible modular system grounded in good bioclimatic practice, with a precast hollow-core slab structure that raises the level of industrialisation and reduces construction waste.

In social housing, sustainability is also urban: Maiporé (Soacha, 380–480 VIS and VIP apartments with Colsubsidio) applies passive measures for ventilation, thermal comfort and daylight, rainwater reuse and a waste-management plan with a pilot block for plastics recycling.

This approach moves within the Colombian regulatory framework —Resolution 549 of 2015 sets minimum water and energy savings for new buildings— and is nourished by the studio’s participation in the sustainability committees of CAMACOL Cundinamarca and in the Colombian Green Building Council (CCCS).
